Florida politicians have spent months pushing 6 big lies about your property tax cut, and nobody has fact checked them. Until now. I read the whole amendment, and I'm furious they're using scare tactics to stop Florida homeowners from voting for the biggest property tax cut in Florida history.

The biggest lie is that if you vote for Amendment 3, they'll have to cut police and fire. Amendment 3 raises your homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 on January 1st, 2027, then to $250,000 in 2028. For about 60% of Florida homeowners, that wipes out the non-school part of the bill completely. Not a discount. Gone. Rentals, vacation homes and businesses still get taxed, and they make up about 70% of every property tax dollar collected in Florida. Amendment 3 also writes into the Constitution that property tax money has to fund police, fire, EMS, schools and roads first. DEI programs and nonprofits handing out grants to their friends aren't on that list. On top of that, House Bill 1329 now forces every city and county to post online exactly how they could cut 10% without touching law enforcement or fire.
The second lie is that your assessed value resets to market value. People are reading one sentence out of a 20 page bill and panicking instead of reading the next sentence. That next sentence keeps your Save Our Homes cap word for word. Take a $400,000 home assessed at $225,000. In 2027, that homeowner pays non-school property tax on just $75,000. In 2028, they pay nothing.
What about counties jacking up the millage rate? My man Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 4-F, which is already in effect. Raising the rate up to 10% above the rollback rate now takes a two-thirds vote. Anything higher takes a unanimous vote or a vote of the people. Good luck getting reelected after that. Raising the sales tax won't work either. Cities have no power to do it, and counties need you to approve it at the ballot box.
Fees are the one lie that's actually true. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor didn't talk about cutting the budget or finding the waste. She went straight to it: "We may have to pass assessments to take care of our first responders." Tampa's budget went from $1 billion in 2019 to $1.8 billion in 2025. That's a 78% jump while inflation was only 26%. And no matter how you feel about the new Rays stadium, she found $80 million in property tax money for it. This amendment doesn’t add fees, your commissioners are saying they will do it instead of looking for ways to cut the budget. That's on your commissioners, not the amendment. Vote them out.
The last lie is aimed at renters, and once you sift through all the BS, it's actually great news nobody's talking about. 👇🏼

👉🏼 Renters are being told that if they don't own a home in Florida by December 31st, they're stuck with the old $50,000 exemption for five years. That deadline was never about buying a house. It's about whether Florida was already your permanent home, even if you rent. If it was, you get the full new exemption the day you buy. No five year wait. Make sure your driver's license, voter registration, car registration and tax filings all show your Florida address before the end of this year.

Don't let your local politicians turn this into a political fight. Because the Republican Party is in full support of cutting your property taxes, and the Democrats want you to keep paying. And your city is hoping you'll vote down party lines. But this is not a Democrat versus Republican thing. It's a “taxpayers against waste” thing. Vote yes on Amendment 3, and put your money back where it belongs. In your pocket.
