DeSantis’ Move to End Property Taxes

This changes everything

Property taxes in Florida are still on the chopping block (and this time it’s real).

Back in 2019, the total property taxes collected in Florida was about $30 billion. Today it’s around $60 billion. And if nothing changes, it’s projected to hit $84 billion by 2031. That’s nearly triple. But your life didn’t get 3x better did it? No.

And here’s what most people don’t realize. The state of Florida does NOT collect property taxes. Your local cities and counties do. They’re the ones raising your bill every year, and they’re the ones spending it….. 👇🏼

Every headline satisfies an opinion. Except ours.

Remember when the news was about what happened, not how to feel about it? 1440's Daily Digest is bringing that back. Every morning, they sift through 100+ sources to deliver a concise, unbiased briefing — no pundits, no paywalls, no politics. Just the facts, all in five minutes. For free.

….Governor Ron DeSantis sent in state auditors to dig into local budgets, and they found $1.86 billion in waste across just 11 cities and counties so far. One city spent $7.5 million on a one-mile sidewalk. Another handed out nearly $1 million so employees could drive nicer cars. Hundreds of thousands went to DEI programs, drag shows, and projects that don’t help you at all.

That’s why people are fed up. Because if your taxes doubled in the last 7 years… and your life didn’t improve… where is the money going?

Now here’s where things get serious. Lawmakers already tried to “fix” this. They introduced 7 different property tax proposals. Each one needed 60% to pass. Sounds fine, until you realize that splits the vote so none of them win. It was designed to fail. And it did.

But while all that was going on, a different plan was being built.

About 70% of property tax revenue comes from commercial properties. That stays. So now we’re only solving for the remaining 30% tied to homeowners. Florida also has a surplus of over $15 billion that can help support smaller counties during the transition.

So no… eliminating property taxes on homestead homes doesn’t mean everything falls apart. It means the system finally gets cleaned up.

And here’s the key piece most people aren’t talking about.

The regular legislative session is over and lawmakers have gone home. So as it stands today, there are no property tax proposals on the ballot for November 2026. They all failed. But they’ll be back in Tallahassee soon for a required special session on the budget and redistricting.

That’s the window.

That’s when Ron DeSantis is expected to call a special session specifically for property tax reform. And this matters because a special session limits the games. It keeps things focused. It makes it a lot harder for politicians to water the plan down or bury it in distractions.

The goal is simple. One clear question on the ballot in November 2026: Do you want to eliminate property taxes on homestead homes? Yes or No.

No 7 options. No confusion. No split vote. Just a straight decision.

But it has to be done right. The plan needs to block cities from replacing property taxes with new ones. It needs to fund police, fire, schools, and roads first. And it needs to avoid sending home prices through the roof overnight. And DeSantis has a plan for all of that.

That’s why the special session is such a big deal. It’s the moment this goes from talk… to something real that actually gets on the ballot.

And once that happens, it’s not up to politicians anymore. It’s up to voters.
