Here's exactly what happened.

Ron DeSantis put a plan on the table to wipe out property taxes on homestead homes in Florida. It was the most aggressive property tax relief proposal any governor in this country has ever pushed. And two Republicans in the Florida Legislature made sure it never had a chance.

First, there’s Senator Jay Trumbull out of Panama City. He's the next Senate President of Florida. On June 1st he stood up in the Senate Appropriations Committee and made the motion to carve school taxes completely out of DeSantis's proposal. School taxes can make up half your property tax bill. Half. So instead of full elimination, Florida homeowners got a watered-down version that still leaves thousands of dollars on the table every single year. Then over in the House, Representative Sam Garrison from Fleming Island, the next Speaker of the Florida House, reportedly demanded a face-to-face meeting with DeSantis and told him directly they weren't touching school funding. These are the two most powerful Republicans in line to lead your state legislature. They had the chance to end property taxes forever and they chose not to. They didn't lose a vote. They made a decision. And that decision is going to cost you.

Now let's look at the actual votes so you know exactly who stood with you and who didn't.

In the Senate the vote was 30 to 9. Every single no vote was a Democrat. But here's the part worth noting. Three Democrats crossed party lines and voted yes. Senator Mack Bernard out of West Palm Beach. Senator Daryl Rouson right here in St. Pete/Tampa. And Senator Barbara Sharief out of Broward County. Those three did the right thing. Credit where it's due. Meanwhile nine of their own colleagues voted to keep taking your money.

The House was a completely different story. The vote was 75 to 26 and not a single Democrat voted yes. Not one. They even had a Democrat, Rep. Dotie Joseph out of North Miami, who voted yes and then switched her vote to no after the fact. She looked around the room and changed her mind. That's not a mistake. That's a choice.

But two Republicans voted no on even this watered-down version. Representative Nathan Boyles, and Representative Patt Maney. Both from the Panhandle. Both Republicans. Both voted against any relief at all. Not against full elimination. Against any relief. Remember those names.

And the politicians aren't even the biggest threat to your wallet right now. There's an organization you've probably never heard of that's been working behind the scenes this whole time. They're called the Florida League of Cities. They represent over 400 Florida cities. Those cities pay membership dues out of their city budgets. Those budgets are funded by your property taxes. So they are running a campaign with your own money to make sure you keep paying property taxes forever.

It's called the Florida Formula and you can check it out yourself: https://www.flcities.com/floridaformulatoolkit/

They've got videos, talking points, and ready-made scripts they hand to every city in Florida so local officials can go on record opposing your tax cut. And what are they protecting? The waste. The DEI programs. The $890,000 spent on teaching the Genderbread Person. 🤷🏻‍♂️ All of it lives inside those city budgets and all of it goes away if you vote yes in November. So they've got five months and your money to convince 41% of Florida voters to vote no. That's all they need. This amendment requires 60% to pass. They don't have to win. They just have to stop you from winning.
