$2B of Your Money Wasted

I’m fired up about this one. Imagine spending $2 billion of taxpayer money on a project, only for it to sit there unused. That’s exactly what happened with Miami’s Intermodal Center—a transportation hub meant to connect trains, buses, and rental cars near the airport. Spoiler alert: it’s now just a shiny, empty station.

Here’s the Breakdown:

• The Idea: Build a massive transportation hub to streamline travel. Sound’s like a great idea, right? Do you know it took them almost 3 decades to complete?

• The Reality: $88 million was spent on a new Amtrak station alone, with another $5.6 million to fix roads and crossings—only for Amtrak to decide it’s “too expensive” to operate.

And Do You Know Who Owns Amtrak???? 🤔 The Government does!

What Went Wrong?

1. Terrible Planning: The station wasn’t built to accommodate the length of Amtrak trains, leading to costly fixes that still didn’t solve the problem.

2. Decades of Delays: This project took almost 30 years, ballooning costs to the point where it wasn’t worth using.

3. No Accountability: Billions of dollars are gone, and no one is being held responsible.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t just about one station—it’s about a pattern. Taxpayer money is being poured into projects like this with no oversight, no accountability, and little to show for it. Meanwhile, private rail systems like Brightline are showing what’s possible with proper planning, funding, and customer focus.

Should Amtrak Be Privatized?

Brightline has proven it’s possible to build clean, efficient rail systems in just a few years without wasting billions. Maybe it’s time for Amtrak to take notes—or pass the torch. It’s obvious the government shouldn’t be in charge of mismanaging our money.
